The Disaster Animal Rescue Team, part of Okaloosa County Animal Services at PAWS, was deployed on Sept. 22 to help with animal rescue needs brought on by Hurricane Ike in Texas.
The five member team spent the week concentrating their efforts on the Bolivar Peninsula, High Island, and Crystal Beach. The team was able to rescue 96 animals, even pulling a very unhappy steer from a canal.

The D.A.R.T unit has had extensive experience in the areas of animal rescue from danger zones, setting up temporary animal shelters and command centers. The team has been deployed to areas hit by Hurricane Charlie and Jeanne in south Florida. They have had hands on training right here at home with Hurricanes Erin, Opal, Dennis and Ivan. The team also spent weeks on the coast of Mississippi after Hurricane Katina.

The unit returned over this past weekend, exhausted and dirty, but with a great feeling of accomplishment.

For more information about the team or its many deployments, Please call Dee Thompson at 243-1525.
