FORT WALTON BEACH — The killing of Zoey, a
teacup poodle, has sparked a felony cruelty to
animals investigation.
The small, 13-year-old dog was asphyxiated when a
plastic bag was placed over its head, said Fort
Walton Beach police Sgt. Marty McLean.
Whoever killed the dog wrote the word
"dead" on a dollar bill and put it
inside the plastic bag.
"This is done out of pure hate," said
Amber Bell, an investigator with the Panhandle
Animal Welfare Society.
The incident at 9 Vine Avenue apparently occurred
during a burglary while the unidentified owner of
the home was away, police said.
"The homeowner returned about 11:30 a.m. and
did not realize anything out of place,"
McLean said. "At about 1 p.m. she realized
the dog was missing from the inside of the home
and found it outside in the yard."
About $40 in cash and a silver bowl were stolen
from the house, police said.
PAWS plans to have a necropsy performed on the
dog, said Dee Thompson-Poirrier, PAWS director of
animal services said. PAWS is working with the
police department on the case.
