Jun. 22, 2007 -- Destin -- There's now a monetary incentive to finding who killed Spot the cat.
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the death.
Spot was discovered by his owner, Henry Boenning,
dead and mutilated on his front lawn on Holly
Street on May 25. A necropsy done by the Panhandle
Animal Welfare Society confirmed that a person,
not an animal, killed the cat.
"Some people are more likely to respond if
money's involved," said Jen Hobgood, program
coordinator for the Humane Society's Southeast
Regional Office. "Whatever it takes, if we
can bring this person to justice."
Hobgood said her office routinely scans news
reports and the story about Spot that ran in the
June 17 edition of the Daily News raised red
flags.
She said it's alarming that the attack seemed
calculated and that Spot was returned. A reward
might lead to an arrest in the case, she said.
"Hopefully we can get some information out of
this," said Hobgood.
Spot's death may also be linked to the deaths of
two other cats that were found under similar
circumstances on Holly Street. However,
investigators can't be certain a human was behind
those attacks because necropsies were not
performed.
Boenning said it was good to hear a reward has
been offered and wondered what will happen next.
No matter what, he will keep a close eye on his
yard.
"If they're smart, they'll wait awhile and
not hit the same neighborhood," he said.
