The Okaloosa County Disaster Animal Relief Team (DART), headed by Dee Thompson-Poirrer, has teamed with other DART teams from across the country to rescue, feed and house stranded pets in the devastated areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. Progress is being made but much more needs to be done. The local Humane Society at
PAWS has taken in over 100 pets from people that evacuated to Okaloosa County. Conditions are crowded at the shelter and foster homes are being sought. In the process of securing funding for additional kennels and runs to alleviate the over-crowding, the organization is asking for monetary donations to speed up the process. PAWS also needs other donations of towels, blankets, and canned dog and cat foods.
PAWS has been at the Joint Disaster Recovery Assistance Center located on Mary Esther Cutoff behind the Sun Plaza movie theater distributing food for evacuee’s dogs and cats and taking applications for animals that need to be fostered. For assistance call (850) 243-1525
