Law tougher on animal fights

Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday signed into law a bill that lets law enforcement officers take more action against more people engaged in staged fights between animals.

The measure (HB 1911) had the backing of law enforcement and animals lovers alike.

It was the last action the Senate took before ending its regular session earlier this year.

The old law made “baiting” or using animals for fighting illegal.

The new one extends that by making it illegal to be connected to animal fighting in a number of ways, including breeding, transporting, selling or simply owning any animal for the purpose of animal fighting.

It also makes it illegal to work at animal fights, such as providing security or being a referee.

The measure also changed the law to let law enforcement agents serve search warrants at any time on facilities where animal fighting is thought to be happening. The old law allowed such searches only during daylight hours. The law also clarifies that “animal fighting” includes roosters, other birds, dogs, bears and other animals.
